Born in New Haven, CT, USA, 1971, raised in Vienna, Austria.
Founded first theater group during high school. Went on to study theater at the Vienna City Conservatory. After his first year there he was cast for 35 shooting days in the award winning feature film Ich gelobe by W. Murnberger (1994). Did more theater, film and tv the following years.
Enrolled studies as screenwriting and directing major at the Vienna Film Academy (University of Music & Dramatic Arts) in 1994. Participated in several additional trainings and workshops (Visions, Sources, Arista, improvisation, body work, acting). Directed numerous shorts. His social spot Sheep was presented at the Cannes Lions 2000. In reaction to eye witnessing the events of 9/11 in New York, he wrote / directed / co-produced the satirical short Air Square (2002), which was first picked up by distributor MicroCinema Intl. (San Francisco) and then Network Ireland TV (Dublin). Air Square was sold to broadcasters and venues world wide and received several prizes. In 2002 he started using Systemic Structural Constellations (SySt), a solution focused group simulation process, for personal and content development. He went on to write / direct / co-produce / edit the epic documentary The End of the Neubacher Project, which had been in development since 1998. This also became his thesis film. He received his Masters with distinction in directing film from Michael Haneke. The End of the Neubacher Project premiered in the competition of the IDFA 2006 (Amsterdam). It went on to win the lucrative First Steps Award for Best Documentary in Berlin (2006) and was presented at the MoMA in N.Y (2008). The film received an extensive festival tour and was sold to broadcasters world wide.
Marcus J. Carney continues to develop original projects. He also consults producers, writers, actors and fellow directors and he coaches on request.
